Living with Fears

October 12, 2026

“I sought the Lord, and he answered me; he delivered me from all my fears.” – Psalm 34:4, NIV

Each of us has lived through fearful moments. Some fears, such as that of illnesses, loneliness or death, are familiar to all.  Other fears, such as worries over illnesses, losing a job, financial uncertainty or our children’s future, may affect some of us more than others.

Each person experiences fear in a very personal and unique way. At times, fear can rob us of sleep, drain our joy, and cause us to behave in ways that affect our relationship with others.

So how do we live with, or overcome, our fears?  We can learn from Jesus. In the Garden of Gethsemane, as He contemplated the suffering of the cross and separation from the Father, He experienced deep anguish. In that moment, He turned towards the Father in surrender and trust.

Acknowledge our fears honestly.

It is impossible to simply ignore our fears, and often, we cannot remove their sources. Fear is a natural human response. What matters is whom we turn to when fear arises. Throughout the Book of Psalms, we often read of how the psalmist deals with his own fears. He turns to God and pours out his heart before Him, and then anchors himself again in God’s faithfulness (Psalm 34:4). In Psalm 56:3, the psalmist writes: "When I am afraid, I put my trust in you." Notice it is not "if" but "when”.

Besides acknowledging and bringing our fears to God, it also helps to share our fears with trusted companions. Speaking honestly with someone who will listen helps us process our thoughts and brings God’s truth into places where fear once held power.

Anchor ourselves in God's Presence.

Throughout Scripture, courage is tied to being in God’s presence, not the removal of danger. Moses told Israel, "Do not be afraid, for the Lord your God goes with you" (Deuteronomy 31:6). Joshua heard the same promise as he faced overwhelming challenges (Joshua 1:9).

The presence of fear does not mean the absence of faith. First John 4:18 reminds us that "perfect love casts out fear". God's perfect love for us—demonstrated at the cross—has the power to dismantle the stronghold of fear in our lives.

Step out in obedience despite our fears.

Sometimes, like Peter, we need to step out of the boat to walk on water towards Jesus (Matthew 14:25-33). We obey not because we are fearless, but because His call is greater than our hesitation. Courage is not the absence of fear; it is moving forward with faith, and with God despite our trembling. In those moments of obedience, we experience Him intimately, discovering that His bidding is more than sufficient for our deepest fears.

Our fears need not define us. Each time we are fearful, we learn again to place our trust in the One who walks with us through every uncertainty of life.

“So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” – Isaiah 41:10, NIV
