You are God’s Masterpieces

July 14, 2025

"For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago." — Ephesians 2:10 (NLT)

If you have ever visited a museum, you would have seen priceless paintings, sculptures, or artifacts hailed as masterpieces. For example, crowds gather every day to admire the Mona Lisa at the Louvre in Paris, and to view Michelangelo’s sculpture of David in Florence.

A masterpiece is a work of excellence—crafted with great skill and purpose, and unique in its kind. In Ephesians 2:10, the Bible describes us as God’s masterpiece — His finest creation, designed with purpose and value. The Greek word for “masterpiece” is poiema, meaning a work of art, craftsmanship, or handiwork. The New English Translation Bible translates it as God’s “creative work”

You are Unique.

How assuring to know that we were not accidentally conceived, or the result of mere cosmic chance. Just as every masterpiece is crafted with intentionality, God, the Master Creator, designed us with intricate details and purpose. Each of His works is unique — no two people, not even identical twins, are exactly alike.

Our worth does not come from what we do or how the world perceives us, but from the One who created us. Psalm 8:5 tells us that God has crowned us with “glory and honour”.

Our identity and significance comes from our sonship (and daughtership) with our Heavenly Father: "Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God." — John 1:12 (NIV)

Created for Good Works.

In Christ, we are created to do good works that God has specifically prepared for us. The good works refer to the unique roles and callings God has given to us to live out His purposes. This means that every believer has a part to play in God’s kingdom.

Each one of us has a unique set of life experiences, family background, personality, gifts and skills, and God will use our uniqueness to accomplish the good works He has in mind when He created us. When we live out His calling and purpose for us, we fulfil the desires of the Creator and bring pleasure to Him.

Living as God’s Masterpiece.

Our painful life experiences may have led us to question our worth and identity. However, Ephesians 2:10 assures us that our past does not define our worth or how He sees us. As a dirty and crumpled $100 note still retains its fiat value, our value remains unchanged regardless of what we have been through in life. Nevertheless, living out our true identities requires us to reject the lies of worthlessness we sometimes tell ourselves.

Personal Reflection.

Take some time to read Psalm 139. As you do, highlight or underline any phrases that resonate with you. Pause to reflect on these truths:

  • Give thanks to God for creating you so wonderfully.
  • Affirm the significant people in your life (spouse, children, siblings, etc.) by reminding them that they too, are God’s masterpieces (Psalm 139, Ephesians 2:10). Appreciate them for their uniqueness in Christ.
  • Embrace your identity in Christ and walk boldly in His calling.

You are God’s masterpiece. Live intentionally and purposefully!
