God's Gifts to Us

"This is what I have observed to be good: that it is appropriate for a person to eat, to drink and to find satisfaction in their toilsome labour under the sun during the few days of life God has given them—for this is their lot. Moreover, when God gives someone wealth and possessions, and the ability to enjoy them, to accept their lot and be happy in their toil—this is a gift of God. They seldom reflect on the days of their life, because God keeps them occupied with gladness of heart.” – Ecclesiastes 5:18-20 (NIV)

Covid-19 has brought much disruption and despair for many of us. As we learn to live in an endemic state, we are filled with both apprehension and fresh hope that life will return to normalcy. May we consider the words of the Preacher in Ecclesiastes who reminds us to be thankful and make the most of what God has given us.

God-given lot in life. Each one of us has been given a lot in life – what we eat, drink and work – in the short span we have on earth. Our different lots are determined by God, and it is not for us to compare. Our lot in life is not just about merry making; it includes toil and even suffering. All of us have our share of joys and sorrows, achievements and failures, blessings and heartaches. Nonetheless, we will find satisfaction when we journey through the ups and downs in our walk with God. Amid a season of uncertainty and adjustments, God’s mercy, love and grace toward us remain unceasing and steadfast. God’s unchanging character is the foundation for our contentment and thankfulness. Won’t we pause to give thanks for who God is and the life we have with our Heavenly Father?

God-given gift to enjoy life. When we accept our lot in life, God gives us the ability (gift) to enjoy it. This enjoyment of life is not the wanton pursuit of pleasure and reckless self-gratification, but an appreciation of our life with God and His blessings. Some of us find it hard to enjoy life because we are laden with anxiety and worry, or feel depleted of energy by our current life situation. May we experience His comfort as we cast all our anxieties on our loving Father, because He cares for us (1 Pet 5:7). Let me encourage us to make time for play, to enjoy the simple pleasures of life and His blessings. When was the last time you did something that brought you joy?

God-given joy in our hearts. The preoccupation with our families, work and the future may weigh on our hearts and rob us of joy. The Preacher reminds us that “God keeps them [us] occupied with gladness of heart.” This joy is God’s gift to us and we can hold onto it regardless of our life’s circumstances. We can boldly ask God to “keep us busy” (NASB) with His joy and the joys of life, so that we can displace the incessant worries in our minds. Joy is a choice we make in each moment, and we can pray for a daily infilling of this joy.

As we enjoy these gifts from our Heavenly Father, may we also respond in thanksgiving to the Giver of every good gift.
