Day 20

White Christmas

Watching a gentle snowfall from the window of a warm house is tranquilizing to me. Right before my eyes, the world outside is transformed. A thorough snow turns everything white.

Read Isaiah 1:18.
“Come now, let us reason together,” says the Lord. “Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they are red as crimson, they shall be like wool.”

I love the poetic comparison our Lord makes to the snow. Jesus Christ’s sacrifice is the world’s greatest snowfall. Every sin, past, present and future, that I or anyone else makes, can be covered – there is none too big.

Beneath a deep layer of snow, most objects lose their shape. A car left parked on the street looks more like an igloo than an automobile. Individual branches of an evergreen appear as one single clump, and a prickly bush on the ground becomes nothing more than a smooth bulge, if it can be seen at all.

In the hands of our loving Savior, our sins are completely erased. We are changed. And this snow never melts.

Unlike the writer of “White Christmas,” you don’t have to settle for dreaming. Christian, live in Christ’s power. Allow His forgiveness to cover you, change you, redefine you. Rest.
