Day 14

Little Drummer Boy

I remember listening to this carol on my Winnie the Pooh record player. I was enchanted with the idea that the little boy caused Jesus to smile. If you recall the words to the song, the little boy was invited to come and see the newborn King.

He was told to bring his finest gift before Jesus in order to bring him honor.

“Little Baby (par-rum-pa-pum-pum),
I am a poor boy too (par- rum-pa-pum-pum) .
I have no gift to bring (par-rum-pa-pum- pum)
that’s fit to give a King (par-rum-pa-pum-pum).
Shall I play for you on my drum?
Then He nodded (par-rum-pa-pum-pum);
The ox and lamb kept time (par-rum-pa-pum-pum).
I played my drum for Him (par-rum-pa-pum-pum)
I played my best for Him (par-rum-pa- pum-pum).
Then He smiled at me, Me and my drum.

The little boy’s intent was to honor Jesus. Since he did not have gifts that we normally think of as honoring, he gave of himself.

First Corinthians 10:31 says, “Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.”

It was God who gave the little boy the ability to play the drums. God has given us everything. We can neither impress Him nor can we earn more of His acceptance.

But He welcomes our honor and our praise. We were created to do it. That makes Him smile.
