Equipping the wider Body of Christ across Asia
For many church members across Asia, the desire to serve God often meets a practical barrier: the intensive model of traditional seminary. While deep theological training remains essential for pastors, teachers, and missionaries, most believers are marketplace professionals and parents who cannot step away from work or family for years of study. Yet they, too, need to be "equipped as saints for the work of ministry" (Ephesians 4:12).
4Twelve Academy, a new initiative by East Asia School of Theology (EAST), was created to bridge this gap. Named after the biblical mandate to equip the saints, it offers flexible, bite-sized learning that fits into everyday life.
Traditional theological education has long focused on "Deep Divers"—those pursuing intensive, full-time training. While this depth remains indispensable, it was never intended to be the only pathway for serving God's people.
The growth of bi-vocational leadership in Asian churches points to a different metaphor: the "Strategic Snorkeler." Picture a crowded surface of snorkelers, representing the majority of believers who need modular, accessible training across disciplines—leadership, counselling, theology of work, and missions—without stepping away from their marketplace calling. In this context, bite-sized learning is less about convenience than a strategic necessity for regional impact.
As part of EAST, an accredited institution with experienced teachers, 4Twelve Academy's courses carry recognised, credible standing. Certificates can support further study, validate a participant’s training, and help church leaders better assess and deploy their people.

4Twelve Academy's aim is to develop biblically grounded, culturally relevant leaders for the church in Asia. Certification is not the destination but a marker of readiness for service. Increasingly, what defines a "trained leader" is not simply the length of study, but how effectively that learning is put into practice.
As we look at our own spheres of influence, we have to ask ourselves: are we content to watch from the shore, or are we ready to be equipped for the work of service that lies ahead?
