Recently, in a West African nation, a Cru® staff member showed the “JESUS” film, based on Luke’s Gospel, in a local language. Because the venue was right across from a local non-Christian religious leader’s home, he knew that after watching and responding to the film, many viewers would be afraid to publicly declare their new faith in Jesus. He told them, “Anyone who was touched by the message of the film, and wants to accept Jesus Christ as His Savior, do so privately and then come ask me for a Bible.”

Afterwards, “Achmed*,” a young man of 23, requested a Bible, not because he believed in Jesus, but because he wanted to find the errors and contradictions in it, as often described by the local religious leaders. However, as he began to read it, he was drawn to the Gospel of John because he had a friend named John.

As he read through the night, something unexpected happened. A deep sense grew within him that the words of the Bible were true, and he couldn’t stop reading it.

Early the next morning, at 4:30 a.m., he called the Cru staff member. “I want to know more about Jesus,” he said, “so I’ve decided to start attending a church.”

Today, because of the power of the Word of God, “Achmed” is a committed member of that local Christian church, growing steadily in his faith and his walk with the Lord.

Since 1951, Cru has helped individuals who grapple with integrating faith into daily life by offering practical steps and community support. As a result, countless people in over 190 countries have been empowered to move from passive belief to active faith.
