Located in Southeastern Europe, between Macedonia and Hungary

Strong links between ethnicity and religion have exacerbated tensions in the Balkans for centuries. Both republics are predominantly Orthodox. Constitutionally there is freedom of religion, but with preferential treatment accorded to the Orthodox Church. Evangelical congregations are few, small and scattered. Christian mission agencies have found it hard to establish long-term ministry.
