What’s so great about the Great Commandment?

John Sather November 17, 2014

Do you ever wonder what’s so great about the Great Commandment? How does loving our neighbor play out in our lives?

As followers of Jesus, our highest longing is to love God and honor Him with our lives. We do that when we live as Jesus did and do as He asks us to do.

In Matthew 25, Jesus outlines what it means to honor Him. He asks us to feed the hungry, satisfy the thirsty, welcome the stranger, clothe the naked, visit the sick and go to the imprisoned.

When we care for the hungry, the broken, the disabled, the aged, the marginalized, the powerless, we see our own bankruptcy in a fresh way. We discover anew the meaning of grace and mercy for our own lives.

So, the command to love our neighbor gives us new and deeper understanding of God’s love for us.

Pastor Tim Keller says it well, “The heart of what I am supposed to do is preach the Word, win people to faith and disciple them. But I can’t disciple people without telling them to help the poor.”

That is why Cru's inner city ministry is so grateful for you. Your compassion for the poor, demonstrated by your prayers for the ministry, makes it possible for us to exist and makes God’s love visible to a broken world.
