Why do we share the gospel? Here are four reasons that might change how you think about evangelism — that is, sharing Jesus Christ with people who do not know Him yet. We share the gospel ...
We exist to bring glory to God.
But what is glory? It’s something like fame.
Why does God want glory? Because God is so great that when we don’t glorify Him, we’re giving Him something less than He deserves.
We make God famous when we tell others about who He is and the good things He has done. When people believe in Jesus, God’s glory is known and shown (2 Corinthians 4:5-6).
Have you shared your story of what Jesus has done in your life?
“To live without hope is to cease to live,” said Fyodor Dostoevsky, author of Crime and Punishment. One of our basic needs as humans is to have hope, but many people today don’t know where to find it.
Paul, writing to the Christians in Ephesus, reminds them that once they were “without hope and without God in the world” (Ephesians 2:12, New International Version).
But God, full of love and mercy, reached out and brought them new life in Jesus (Ephesians 2:4-5). When we share the gospel, we offer the hope of a new life with Christ that can’t be found anywhere else.
Which of your family members, friends or neighbors have yet to experience the hope God offers?
God has entrusted us with the privilege of being His ambassadors, or spokespeople.
Paul describes it this way:
“All this is from God, who reconciled us to Himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: that God was reconciling the world to Himself in Christ, not counting people’s sins against them. And He has committed to us the message of reconciliation. We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors, as though God were making His appeal through us. We implore you on Christ’s behalf: Be reconciled to God” (2 Corinthians 5:18-20, NIV, emphasis added).
In the ancient world, if an ambassador didn’t share the king’s message, what would happen? Disaster would ensue — wars would be fought, aid would be denied, lives would be lost. As Christ’s ambassadors we have the honor of proclaiming the message that He gives to us — the amazing message that we are reconciled to God through Christ!
What would happen if you began your day thinking, “I am God’s ambassador”?
The author of 1 John says, “We write this to make our joy complete” (1 John 1:4, NIV). Not only did talking about Jesus bring him joy, but so did the anticipation that others would share in the joy of knowing Jesus.
When we believe that God loved us so much that He was willing to die on our behalf, there is nothing that can take away what that produces — indescribable joy. If we are enjoying our relationship with Christ, we can’t help but want others to know and experience God’s love and grace too.
Who do you want to experience this joy?
