Vienna, Austria

Vienna is the capital of Austria as well as its largest city. With over 2 million residents and 170000 students at universities in the city, Vienna offers a fun college town feeling.

The city sits at the foothills of the Alps, and the Danube river flowing through the city makes it a bridge between the East and the West. Walking around the city you’ll hear multiple languages and meet people from all walks of life and faith backgrounds.

Vienna claims the title of “World’s Most Livable City” four years in a row. With its UNESCO World Heritage status, Vienna is an international tourist attraction with its history of art and architecture. Known as the City of Music you can learn to waltz and attend a ball held in the city’s palaces or other venues. However, Vienna balances the historic and the modern with its claim as the home to inventions such as PEZ and the snow globe.

You could be part of the student led movement team and experience how God will use you to make a difference in the life of students.

YOU MAY BE WONDERING…

Where can I study?

University of Vienna and Vienna University of Technology are the main 2 universities in the city, although there are many others to consider. There are strong connections with American University programs.

What types of classes can I take?

Many American students study German language and European history and culture. It is best to consult your study abroad office and the department of your major to select courses that you need for your degree requirements.

When can I go?

In order to line up better with the American semester calendar, many American students are enrolled slightly earlier than the European semester. The Austrian fall semester starts at the beginning of October and ends in January. With the month of February as a semester break, the spring semester is from the beginning of March to the end of June.

What kind of ministry will I be doing?

The student movement in Vienna is still young. Therefore you can help us by finding key student leaders and building relationships with students interested in knowing more about God. Activities range from sharing your faith and holding bible studies. You can even use materials like Soularium and Perspective cards which we have in German and English.

Where will I live?

Most likely you will live in a student residence with other international and Austrian students. Other options could be to live in an apartment with other students or with a host family.

Will there be a language barrier?

English is very widely spoken in Vienna and can sometimes be an attraction for students who want to improve. It is also possible to start learning German at the university with no previous experience. Depending on if you come through your college’s study abroad program, all your classes could be taught in English.

How much does this cost?

The cost of tuition and fees varies by each campus and by the university you currently attend.

When is the application deadline?

  • For fall semesters, please apply here by August 1st.
  • For spring semesters, please apply here by December 1st.
  • For summer terms, please apply here by May 1st.
