Hong Kong, China

Hong Kong, one of the world’s leading financial centers, has a population of over 7.3 million with various nationalities.

With a total land area of only 1,106 square kilometres (427 sq mi), people experience a packed, dynamic and fast-paced metropolitan life. Though it may sound a little daunting, you can get refreshed by exploring a nearby nature reserve or a sleepy fishing village with our first-rate public transport system, which puts every corner within easy reach.

Since Hong Kong acts as a bridge between China and the rest of the world, studying here offers you plenty of opportunities to meet people of different cultures with a truly international outlook and atmosphere.

The University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, and the Chinese University of Hong Kong are ranked within the global top 50 institutions in the QS World University Rankings® 2016-2017. We believe students here will become future leaders in Hong Kong and even in the world. We have student-led movements in the 5 top universities of Hong Kong, each supported by a local staff team. Also a catalytic staff team is supporting the student leaders in almost 10 other campuses. We welcome believers who want to serve with us and who want to be equipped as multiplying disciples of Jesus to saturate our campuses with the Gospel.

YOU MAY BE WONDERING…

Where can I study?

International students are welcomed by the following universities:

What types of classes can I take?

These universities offer a wide variety of undergraduate and postgraduate programs. You may check out their homepages and contact your study abroad office for more information.

When can I go?

The academic year starts in September, with the second semester starting in January.

What kind of ministry will I be doing?

We have spiritual movements in the 5 campuses mentioned above. Each movement has around 30 core student leaders and 70 discipleship group members. There are morning prayer meetings, outreach activities, discipleship groups and training every week. All of these are conducted in Cantonese. Our students can be your interpreters when you come.

HKU and UST have started international ministries. Besides discipleship groups, they are trying to reach out to other international students. Students come from all over the world, not only from the English-speaking countries, but also a lot from China and increasing numbers from Central Asia.

Where will I live?

Some universities offer dormitories for international students and the cost varies. Please check out their homepages.

Will there be a language barrier?

Most lectures are delivered in English. There is not much of a language barrier on campus. Though most people from Hong Kong speak only Cantonese in daily life, essential information like menus, signals in the transport systems and official documents are usually bilingual. People can communicate well in English in tourist, educational, and business areas.

How much does this cost?

Tuition costs vary, depending on the campus and if your home university has an exchange program in Hong Kong. You’ll want to consult with your local study abroad office. Most universities will list the costs for on-campus housing. Rent in Hong Kong is expensive, so staying on campus, in a dormitory, is ideal. An average meal will cost you around $6. Food on campus is much cheaper. The highest price for a single ride on the public transport is less than $4.

When is the application deadline?

  • For fall semesters, please apply here by August 1st.
  • For spring semesters, please apply here by December 1st.
  • For summer terms, please apply here by May 1st.
