A lot has happened in your life to get you to this point. You have researched, you have spoken to a lot of people, you have prayed and sought God’s will for your life. And now by His grace you are ready to take the plunge and apply for staff, to officially become part of Cru’s High School Ministry.
This article will walk you through each step of the process of joining Cru staff, and point you to helpful resources. Of course, your local Cru staff are always happy to help if you get stuck.
Set Your Time Table
When do you want to attend Cru training (New Staff Orientation) and start your MPD (Ministry Partner Development) process? Consult the NSO page to see the four annual training dates. Note some of the trainings are in person and require you to travel to Florida, while some are virtual.
Take note of the application deadline for the training date in which you are interested (usually around three months prior), and work backward from there. For instance, to attend the training in Summer 2024, the application is due April 1 (no fooling!). Remember, a bunch of references are required as well, so allow time for people to get those done.
Apply, Get References
Go to apply.cru.org to start the application process; it is all spelled out very clearly on the site.
Start thinking now about people you know who can fill out references for you. Cru will ask for one of each of the following people to complete one:
- Cru Staff Member
- Spiritual Leader
- Current or Former Employer
- Peer
Once your application is complete and references are in, someone from Cru’s HR Department will contact you to set up a phone call. This meeting allows us to get to know you better personally and to discuss anything in the application that was unclear or problematic. After that, the evaluation process normally takes less than two weeks.
Cru's support raising training is widely known as the best in the business; other ministries routinely send their people through it.
Attend New Staff Orientation (NSO) and (Institute of Biblical Studies) IBS
Once you have been accepted to Cru staff, you will be asked to register for a ten-day NSO conference in person or virtually (here’s the link again to the four training conferences). If you attend a summer Orientation, you will also be asked to attend the four-week Institute of Biblical Studies (IBS) session immediately prior. Cru provides this teaching to help ensure all staff have a solid theological foundation for ministry.
Apart from theological training, the NSO has two main parts: first, orientation to Cru, its ministry principles and philosophy, and second, training in MPD (Ministry Partner Development), which means training you how to raise your financial support. Cru’s MPD Training is widely known as the best in the business; other ministries routinely send their people through it. It is deeply spiritual and biblically-based, and at the same time intensely practical and up-to-date.
Raise Your Support
You have applied for staff, been accepted, and gone through initial training. This is the big one: Now it is time for you to develop your team of Ministry Partners who will support you financially and in prayer.
As mentioned above, you will be thoroughly trained and equipped to raise your support. But we realize Ministry Partner Development is a work of the Holy Spirit. Your time in MPD may take six months to a year or even longer, depending on the amount you need to raise. You must be prepared to engage in spiritual battle and to put your self-image on the line – and maybe learn to trust God as you never have before.
But you will not be alone! You will be assigned a coach, someone experienced in the process and who is committed to guiding you through the ups and downs of MPD. Your coach will meet with you weekly, helping you in practical ways as well as focusing on your walk with God.
Report to Your Assignment
When your Ministry Partner Team is complete, you will pack up and join your team and start the incredible, adventurous life of a Cru High School Ministry staff person. We cannot wait to see how God will expand His Kingdom and glorify Himself through you!
For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago. – Ephesians 2:10 NLT
