zBuzz About zBlog

Halloween is two weeks away. But there has been an interesting growing cultural fascination with zombies for some time. Late last year, The New York Times wrote that “Zombies are a value stock…Mainstream interest in zombies has steadily risen over the past 40 years.”

With that in mind,  Broken Phonebooth Productions , here at Cru HQ, developed “ zBlog ,” a multimedia tool and an interactive online character blog. There are six web videos about two or three minutes long. The site goes active today, October 17, and will run until the 31st. There will be new content everyday and the comments section will be monitored. Jordan Lutz, the zombie character, will be answering.

Broken Phonebooth describes zBlog this way:

The Bible is clear—if we don’t have Christ’s renewing power in our lives, we’re dead. Any attempt we make to act alive is just that…an act. We’re pretending, and ultimately doomed to fail. It’s like we’re the living dead. And in the language of today’s students, is there a better illustration than zombies? “zBlog” is about Jordan Lutz, a newly “receased” zombie who wants to believe he’s human. It’s a powerful illustration that helps people think about how a life without Christ is no life at all…

The humor of the series gives it a mainstream appeal, yet the themes provide opportunity for unique spiritual discussions, allowing for ongoing relational evangelism. As students follow along with Jordan’s struggle to prove his humanity, they can relate to his futile attempts to become more than he is. Because every ministry’s needs are different,“zBlog” was created to be flexible for your program.

Topics that can be discussed in conjunction with “zBlog” include:

  • The desire to be more than what we are
• Our denial of our own sin nature
• The temptation to accept our fate
• The impossibility of achieving “completeness” on our own

Some great discussion questions can be found  here . I know this zBlog series is a bit “out there.” But as I consider how we befriend and touch various people and groups who typically have nothing in common with believers, here is one way to open dialogue with some.
