Destino Statistics Challenge

“Nationwide across the USCM, 1 in 27 gospel presentations result in someone trusting Christ. For Destino, that number is 1 in 7. On our campus, it’s 1 in 5.”

We mentioned that statistic to some of our key leaders a few weeks ago and they weren’t sure they believed it. They decided to put the stat to the test. Three girls challenged each other to share the gospel five times in one week. If the statistic held true, they expected to see three new believers when they were finished. At the end of the week they met together to share what God had done. Sure enough, they had shared the gospel 15 times. How many people had trusted Christ?

12.

Stop and think with me for a minute. In his study  Experiencing God , Henry Blackaby said that our job is to “find out where God is at work and join Him.” Right now one of those places is in Destino.  What if, at this moment in history, the best way to reach a campus was through an EFM movement?  For so long, I think I’ve had a subconscious bias that white people were going to be the only ones to reach the world. God has begun to use my time in Destino to challenge that assumption. Something special is happening in the Latino community.

God’s been doing great things through our local Destino movement. Over the past few years we’ve seen more than 100 students and family members place their faith in Christ. Last fall one of our undocumented students personally saw more people trust Christ than any Cru movement in 6 regions of the country. And God hasn’t just been working among Latinos. It is easy for us to think that EFM movements are limited to one ethnicity. We’ve actually seen quite the opposite. Because Latinos are often marginalized on campus as minorities, they relate to other minorities in a unique way. But Destino is not just a minority ministry. God is using Hispanic students to reach the entire campus. We’ve actually seen more Anglo students trust Christ this year through Destino than most Cru movements in our region.

Destino on our campus has become multicultural. Destino has more Anglo leaders than our local Cru movement has Hispanic leaders. It has as many African-American leaders as the Cru movement. There is even a Vietnamese Bible study leader involved with Destino. In a nearby city in our scope, Destino is helping to launch Cru on the campus there. Destino staff member Mark Vera always says, “Destino is not just a ministry  to  Latinos, it is a ministry  through  Latinos to the world.” We’re seeing that happen.

So what about you? Have you thought about launching an EFM movement on your campus? Even if there are few minorities on campus, at some point the response rate of Latinos makes it worth it to begin working specifically with Destino. Take the  Destino Statistic Challenge : Share the gospel 15 times with Latino students and dare God to show up. If you’re in a new city, why not go outside the box and start with EFM before launching Cru? You might be surprised at what God does.
