Have you ever found it hard to have tough conversations? In college you’ll meet people from diverse backgrounds with strong opinions. Inevitably, you will engage in discussions around hot topics. Be prepared. Here’s how.
Alot of current issues stir up passionate views: Black Lives Matter, politics, sexuality, immigration reform, the list goes on… It can be uncomfortable and challenging to talk about these kinds of topics with others.
Many times, people feel deeply and personally connected to these issues. Opinions and experiences are expressed with passion. Expect that the conversation could potentially turn into an argument and get at the core of who you are, but don’t be afraid to engage, especially as a Christian.
Christ calls us to be humble, in other words, to consider others and their opinions as higher than ours. This helps us to have a stance of learning, rather than trying to prove a point. What if I’m offended? We follow Christ’s example of extending grace and truth in our relationships with others (John 1:11). What if I’m afraid of offending others?
You don’t have to be afraid of conversations about controversial issues or other kinds of conflict. They can be an opportunity to be empowered by the Holy Spirit to practice grace, truth, and humility.
Get involved with with a great Christian community. We’re here to help!
