During this transition from high school to college, you are going to experience a variety of emotions; that’s okay.
It can be scary, exciting, and freeing all at the same time. Luckily, transitions are not a new thing for God.
When we look into the Bible, one story is a powerful example of how God stays faithful to people during times of change. Reading through the book of Exodus, we can see that the Jews were oppressed in Egypt.
“They made their lives bitter with harsh labor in brick and mortar and with all kinds of work in the fields; in all their harsh labor the Egyptians worked them ruthlessly” (Exodus 1:14).
God was faithful to these people and eventually, through Moses, guided them out of misery. Even though the Jews were finally free and were destined for a great new home, they did not enjoy the transition at all. They traveled for over thirty years until they reached their final destination. During this time, some of the Jews would have preferred to have died back in Egypt.
“The Israelites said to them, ‘If only we had died by the Lord's hand in Egypt! There we sat around pots of meat and ate all the food we wanted, but you have brought us out into this desert to starve this entire assembly to death’”(Exodus 16:3).
Even in the face of these protests, the Lord was faithful to the Jews and they eventually reached their new destination.
There may points throughout the semester where, like the Jews, you’d rather have stayed at home. During exam week or the night before a big paper is due, you may wish you hadn’t gone to college in the first place. In these moments, try to remember what the ultimate goal of you being in college is.
College itself is merely a transition into the real world. Similar to the Jews, you will be going through this transition for what will seem like a very long amount of time and you will be miserable at some points. Remember that God does, in fact, have a plan for your life. This transition is only temporary, and it will be used for His greatness and glory.
In Proverbs 16, it is seen that our plans are nothing compared God’s great plan for our lives. It’s important to remember that “in their hearts humans plan their course, but the LORD establishes their steps” (Proverbs 16:9). You might have an awesome plan for how you want to transition into college, or you may not have any plan at all. What matters is that you trust God to establish your steps. God will be with you during this transitional season, just like he has been during every other season of life.
