Though God is findable and near, it oftentimes takes a good friend to uncover the promise of life through the gospel. Unfortunately, even though many students desire to “co-journ” in the spiritual journeys of their friends, insecurity, fear, and the lack of a few simple skills often prevent them.
One of the things that our ministry has realized is that tools and training by themselves have limited impact . . . unless there is a clear and simple action point connected to them.
Last spring, Cru's Research & Development team field-tested a strategy that encouraged students to focus on a few doable steps with a clear outcome for a limited time. It’s called SomeTime .
SomeTime is a cojourner experience—a time dedicated to exploring the spiritual backstories of others. During this experience students ask friends, “Sometime, I’d like to hear about your spiritual journey . . . would you be up for that?” And, during that conversation (or in the next one) students ask if they can meet to hear about their friends’ faith journey.
SomeTime seeks to provide easy connections to the gospel through planned conversations. It’s easy . . . really easy.
Based on the first definition above, no, SomeTime is not a silver bullet. It's definitely not a magical, instant cure for overcoming common evangelism obstacles. (If such a thing did exist, surely it would have surfaced in the 2000 years since Jesus gave the Great Commission.)
However, SomeTime does live up to the second definition of a silver bullet: it is simple and, from what we've seen so far, very effective .
