How to Find the Perfect Mentor

Mentors provide insights that lead to personal and professional development.

It's never too early to pursue a mentor. During college it's easy to find people that share your interests and have time to interact. After college it becomes much more difficult. Most relationships start and develop through shared professional interests. Your first job is most likely not going to be your dream job. Finding mentors that can strengthen your faith and prepare you for a fulfilling career is critical, especially in today's economy and job market.

Here's a few tips on finding the perfect mentor:

  • Ask someone mature in their faith for a list of business professionals that they know. Look them up on LinkedIn or perform a Google search to learn about their background career path.
  • Ask the person that gave you their name to introduce you over email. You may love to text or use Facebook, but a professional connection still starts over email.
  • Continue to reach out to your potential mentor even if the person delays their response. Many of the best mentors are extremely productive people with full schedules. Their lack of response is less about not wanting to meet with you and more about staying current with their existing responsibilities.
  • Prepare for every meeting. Great mentors often command high wages and see their time in relationship to their hourly rate. An hour meeting with you may seem small, but for them it definitely represents a financial sacrifice. Coming to the meeting prepared with questions and an outline for discussion will demonstrate respect and enrich your meetings.

"Sluggards do not plow in season;
so at harvest time they look but find nothing."--Proverbs 20:4

Now is the time to begin forming intentional relationships with those who strengthen your heart and your hands! I have found the process of pursuing and building relationships with mentors to be a faith enriching process. I am always surprised by how generous the Lord is to provide people who can build me up in ways I knew I needed, and in ways where I had no idea I had a need!

Consider taking a step of faith by searching for a mentor. It could change your life!
