My name is DJ Jenkins, and I'm a former staff guy called to plant a church in LA . I've started a series called the Top 5 Things I Learned from Cru, where I'm chronicling my 9 years on staff and the things Jesus graciously taught me while there. The first entry can be found here .
The second thing I am incredibly grateful for learning is that evangelism is an all-the-time thing.
Sharing Jesus is for every follower of Jesus at all times
Cru spends a lot of time focusing on the Great Commission , one of the final commands of Jesus found in Matthew 28:18-20 . And rightly so. Many times people say the most important things right before they leave, and it was the same with Jesus.
What I love about Cru is that they taught me the Great Commission is not for a select few "gifted" Christians, but for every follower of Jesus. It is a great banner hanging over the life of everyone who loves Jesus, so that whether you are an architect, teacher, business person, designer, pastor, Cru staff member, etc, you should always filter your vocation & life through "how can I be a part of helping fulfill the Great Commission through this?" The Great Commission is not an optional command to follow if you're good at telling people about Jesus, but one we all must ask the grace to do.
I am thankful I have been taught to always filter my life through the Great Commission grid. And really, the times I am closest to Jesus, the times I am sensing the reality of the gospel most deeply upon my heart, that is when I realize I am a fool to ever keep this good news myself! His grace is so stunning, so amazing; His love is so powerful and life-changing, that I have to commit my life to share about it.
