Your Time is Valuable. Invest Wisely.

It’s so easy to confuse humility with stewardship when thinking about our time.

On the one hand we are broken, limited, and sinful people. On the other hand we are divinely created, loved, and empowered by Jesus.

Every second counts. And yet not every second counts. This tension can drive me crazy!

When I’m stuck in a rut or discouraged about the way I’m investing my time I think about three things:

1. The incredible and underserved privilege of participating with Jesus in his redemptive plan.

Sometimes (many times) sharing my faith or leading a bible study can feel discouraging. Whether it’s a personal struggle or a tough group every minute you spend investing in eternity is worthwhile. I often step back and remember how amazing it is that Jesus entrusts his plans to us, knowing that we will not execute them perfectly.

2. The tremendous opportunities that are available because of Jesus’ infinite resources and desire to multiply our efforts.

The most enjoyable and powerful times I have had on ministry have come when I have taken steps of faith that significantly depend on Jesus coming through. Water into wine, crumbs of bread into loaves—these are not incremental changes but radical, exponential outcomes that reflect God’s character, not his whims. Consider spending time this week dreaming of a future that could be if Jesus radically multiplied your time. What’s one small step that Jesus could use to transform your campus?

3. The return of Christ.

There is a limited amount of time remaining. Rather than see this as a burden, consider seeing it as a challenge to lead boldly and invest wisely. If you have played a sport you probably know the difference between playing hard and playing scared. Ministry isn’t about what we have to do, but what we get to do in light of who Jesus is.
