“When I get a little money I buy books; and if any is left, I buy food and clothes.” ~ Erasmus
In October of 2010, I compiled a “Must-Have-In-Your-Library” Book List consisting of 62 titles. The list was provoked by the many people who’ve asked me what books I recommend as “must reads.” Recently, I added more books to the list (including out-of-print titles that can still be obtained), bringing the number up to an even 100.
Three things to consider when you look at the list:
1. These are the best books in my opinion. Books are like ice cream flavors. Everyone’s opinion is different. The books that made the list are (to my mind) unique, powerful, spiritually helpful, and in line with the main themes of my ministry. For this reason, these books should be in the library of every person who has moved beyond evangelical.
2. The list doesn’t include academic, dense theological works. (There are a few rare exceptions on the list.) If I added such titles, the list would easily come up to 150. But most people don’t read such books. So I kept that genre out.
3. The list also doesn’t include Bible commentaries. Perhaps I’ll add commentaries in the future.
If you are building a spiritual library, I recommend that you begin with these titles .
Be sure to read the explanatory note at the top with the disclaimer. (Each book can be purchased directly from the list page at a discount.)
Once you’ve had a chance to peruse the list, feel free to share your comments below. Anything you’d add?
