Your ministry’s future is secure if you actively identify the next generation of leaders.
There are so many things to focus on as a leader of a ministry, but you do not want to ignore what I call “emerging leaders.” It’s those who have the ability to lead in both character and skill but do not yet have a title. This group is characterized by their commitment, and in order for them to develop they need to SERVE within the various parts of your ministry structure.
The end of the ministry year is the time to SELECT emerging leaders. The beginning and middle of the year is the time to expose, identify, and empower emerging leaders.
Expose: Who shows up? Who shows initiative without being asked or told? Who has a passion/conviction related to the mission, vision, and values of your ministry?
Identify: Make a list. And spend 5 minutes on it each week refining that list, adding/subtracting/refining not only the people on it, but the reasons why they are on it. This often produces great discussions about the overall health of your ministry.
Empower: You do not have to give them titles, but you do have to give them authentic leadership experiences; this includes autonomous decision making, accountability to authority, and some sort of follow up/evaluation/encouragement. Often medium to large sized events afford great places to empower emerging leaders.
Select : Choose someone! Not everyone is a leader, or ready for leadership. Stewarding your ministry well requires saying yes and no to people as well as events and programs.
