Crisis Management

At this point in the school year, most Cru staff and student leaders know what to expect:

  1. Tons of people to talk to.
  2. A task list as long as your arm.
  3. Not enough hours in the day.

Sure, life during the first six weeks is hectic, stressful, and exhausting.  But you generally know what’s coming.

However, every once in a while, something unpredictable happens. The school administration wants to shut you down. Or a student leader gets rushed to the hospital with alcohol poisoning. Or your biggest donor declares bankruptcy. Circumstances outside of your control threaten the health of your ministry (or family or missional team). It’s crisis time. This is not something your Strategic Plan prepared you for.

Maybe it’s time to read 2 Chronicles 20. It’s the story of how King Jehoshaphat handled the worst crisis of his life. For all the details and tertiary lessons, read it for yourself. For the Big Idea, read the next couple of paragraphs.

Recognizing that he is in deep doo-doo, Jehoshaphat declares a fast and gathers the people to seek the Lord. He recounts God’s faithfulness in the past and calls on the Lord to deliver them again.  But the real takeaway for me is the last line of his prayer: “We don’t know what to do, but our eyes are on you.”  (v 12)

If you face a crisis this semester – either on campus or in your personal life – make Jehoshaphat’s prayer your own. Then see God answer in ways you don’t expect.
