Sandstone is a forgotten land full of forgotten people. Slavery, racism, and poverty characterize its social and economic landscape. In addition, access to quality health care is limited. Maternal mortality rates are among the highest in Africa due to high risk pregnancy, low quality prenatal care, poor access to emergency assistance, and cultural and socio-economic factors.
Sandstone is a country where Islam has been entrenched there for 1,000 years with little change. Throughout Sandstone’s history there have been several barriers to spiritual change. Not only is there a powerful social resistance to change, but it is also a geographically isolated country with a historic reluctance to engage with the rest of the world. Low literacy, minimal exposure to Christianity, and laws that hinder the spread of the gospel also contribute.
Although the world has forgotten the people of Sandstone, God remembers them. They are on his mind, and his heart bleeds for them to know him and experience his free and abundant life.
You can help bring physical and spiritual healing to the women in Sandstone by joining the Unto Women’s Health Summer Mission trip. In partnership with local staff and their partners, you will participate in leading health education workshops that provide life saving information, while building relationships that lead to Gospel conversations. When you participate in this trip, you help to share the kindness of Jesus in an incredibly tough place by relieving suffering, restoring dignity, and revealing hope.
The Unto Women’s Health Summer Mission trip is open to female nursing students who have completed approximately two semesters with clinical rotation of nursing school. Female students of other majors may be considered providing they have a medical/science background with some clinical knowledge and experience. We seek ten participants who demonstrate interest in maternal and child health, women’s rights, and women’s ministry. If you have questions about your qualifications, please contact us.
Trip dates are June 3 – June 30. To apply, please complete and submit the summer missions application. Two references are required: one from a Cru staff member and one from a nursing professor. Please have your application in by April 1.
