Or reconnecting with the material world?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Scripture to Study<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>But I know that my Redeemer lives,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>and in the end He will stand upon the earth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even after my skin has been destroyed,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>yet in my flesh I will see God.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I will see Him for myself;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>my eyes will behold Him, and not as a stranger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>How my heart yearns within me!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(Job 19:25-27)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Wise Words to Consider<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhy am I a Christian? It\u2019s because I can hold the fact that God still draws straight lines with crooked sticks, I can still hold on the fact that even though for a small period of history, if we look at the long period of history, that mankind manipulated our Christian faith with colonialism to commit genocide, to steal land and resources, and still know that God will bring judgment on all these realities because he continues to use broken people who are redeemed from broken systems to live out his glory\u2026 I&#8217;m a Christian, and I&#8217;m not ashamed of it. But I&#8217;m also a decolonizing one.\u201d&nbsp; &#8211; Jimmy McGee<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A Prayer to Lead You<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>God, you have made us &#8211; both our souls and our bodies &#8211; in your image. We are embodied souls and spirited bodies. And yet, in so many ways, what you joined together for our good, we try to separate in order to do what we want to do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Not only the slaveholders of old, but the greed in our hearts today thrive off of splitting our souls from our bodies. We\u2019d rather keep our faith pristine and separate from our bodily existence in order to have our way. Forgive us. Have mercy on us.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jesus, You are the resurrection and the life. You have redeemed us body and soul, and one day, in our flesh we will see You. Help us today to live integrated and whole lives for Your glory. Shape us by Your resurrection life. Amen.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A Practice to Begin<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Jimmy gave practical steps for confronting vestiges of \u201cslave religion\u201d today:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Be curious. Ask, \u201cWhat did they give me?\u201d and \u201cWhat didn\u2019t they give me?\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Find elders and mentors to teach you about a different way of approaching the Christian faith.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Live out the fact that all truth is God\u2019s truth.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Do you have older mentors in your life to help you continue to grow in decolonizing your faith and seeing the gift of different Christian perspectives? Do you take time to read outside of your own theological comfort zone to learn something new about God? Ask God to give you a godly curiosity and write down the questions that come up as you seek to reconstruct your faith in a way that is centered on wholeness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Questions to Answer<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Jimmy introduced the idea of gnosticism and its prevalence in the American church today. Gnosticism is the idea that the spiritual or immaterial has higher value in the eyes of God, and therefore Christians should be prioritizing spiritual matters above physical or bodily matters. In contrast, the Bible\u2019s emphasis on resurrection reminds us that both spirit and body together are important to God.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In what ways do you see this error of gnosticism in the way you were taught the Christian faith? In what ways do you still see it today in your Christian circles?
