What if the greatest Christian theologians the world has ever known were those whom the world wouldn’t consider theologians at all? What if we realized that a divided life is what’s preventing us from experiencing wholeness? What if the wilderness is not a place to be feared, but rather, a place of expectation?

Spend some time this week thinking about the ways in which you may have taken some of these assumptions for granted. Could these be areas where God is leading you toward a healthy deconstruction/decolonization, so that you can see Jesus more clearly? What would your Christian life look like with these new assumptions?

Scripture to Study

Then Rizpah the daughter of Aiah took sackcloth and spread it for herself on the rock, from the beginning of harvest until rain fell upon them from the heavens. And she did not allow the birds of the air to come upon them by day, or the beasts of the field by night. When David was told what Rizpah the daughter of Aiah, the concubine of Saul, had done, David went and took the bones of Saul and the bones of his son Jonathan from the men of Jabesh-gilead, who had stolen them from the public square of Beth-shan, where the Philistines had hanged them, on the day the Philistines killed Saul on Gilboa. And he brought up from there the bones of Saul and the bones of his son Jonathan; and they gathered the bones of those who were hanged. And they buried the bones of Saul and his son Jonathan in the land of Benjamin in Zela, in the tomb of Kish his father. And they did all that the king commanded. And after that God responded to the plea for the land.

(2 Samuel 21:10-14)

Wise Words to Consider

“I’m seeing everything that’s being taught to me from the seminary classroom, from the pulpit, as the truth, right? The only right whatever truth. I’m hearing all of this, it’s not aligning with my reality. And so I’m starting to ask, How does this fit into the everyday lived experiences of people in the margins? How does this fit into the everyday lived experiences of my abuela, my family? How does this fit? – Kat Armas

A Prayer to Lead You

O God who meets us in the wilderness –

You saw Hagar in her place of harsh banishment.

You wrestled with Jacob at Peniel and gave him a new identity.

You met Abram in a deep sleep as he struggled to believe your promise.

You guided the people of Israel in their wanderings in such a way that even their sandals and clothes didn’t wear out.

You were present even when your people were evicted from the Promised Land.

Every time we have been in a place of wilderness, you have been there. You have made the wilderness a garden of flourishing, even as we felt displaced and afraid.

The wilderness is no longer a place of fear because your Son Jesus walked into the wilderness. Even in that place of temptation and trial, Jesus found deep communion and peace, and strength to fight against the evil one.

Meet us, O God, in the wilderness we find ourselves in today. See us, be with us, and reveal yourself to us, so that we may always know you as the God who sees. Amen.

A Practice to Begin

Kat encouraged us to foster a contemplative spirit to be ready to see God at work in the seemingly ordinary moments in our lives. She also encouraged us to implement a practice to help us remember and take note of the sacred spaces and sacred moments, like writing things down or making an altar of commemoration.

Over the next few weeks, keep a log of all of the places and moments where you saw God at work in your life. At the beginning of each week, pray that God would open your eyes to see these sacred times, and at the end of the week, read through your log to remember the ways God met you that week.

Questions to Answer

Kat talked about how a separation of our mind from our bodies is one of the harmful effects of the Enlightenment and colonialism. This fragmented understanding of ourselves is what prevents us from experiencing wholeness within ourselves, with others, and even with the world around us.

In what ways is this fragmented way of thinking preventing wholeness in your life? How can you push back against this idea and reconnect your mind with your body and your body with the land? How does the Genesis account of the creation of humankind make us see ourselves as embodied rather than fragmented?

Resources to Help

Kat Armas, Abuelita Faith

Kat Armas, Sacred Belonging

The Protagonistas Podcast

Episode Reflection Invitation to Explore Kat Armas turns many of our assumptions on their head.
