Grounded and rooted in a way that Jesus is the driving force of who I am and what I do?\u201d -Wendy Chen<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Episode Reflection<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Invitation to Explore<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Some of us have been taught that being a believer in Jesus means we need to leave our emotions, fears and anxieties \u201cat the door.\u201d But God invites us to bring all of who we are into his presence.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In response to recent tragic events, Wendy Chen says, \u201cYou can\u2019t reconcile what is happening in the world \u2026. But how do I live in the world with all the broken pieces \u2014&nbsp;grounded and rooted in a way that Jesus is the driving force of who I am and what I do?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Bible is filled with songs of lament \u2014 of people crying out to God in times of distress, injustice and sorrow. These passages teach us that God invites us to bring all ourselves, including our difficult emotions, to him.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Scripture to Study<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHow long, Lord? Will you forget me forever?<br>How long will you hide your face from me?<br>How long must I wrestle with my thoughts<br>and day after day have sorrow in my heart?<br>How long will my enemy triumph over me?<br><br>Look on me and answer, Lord my God.<br>Give light to my eyes, or I will sleep in death,<br>and my enemy will say, \u201cI have overcome him,\u201d<br>and my foes will rejoice when I fall.<br><br>But I trust in your unfailing love;<br>my heart rejoices in your salvation.<br>I will sing the Lord\u2019s praise,&nbsp; &nbsp;<br>for he has been good to me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Psalm 13 (NIV)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Wise Words to Consider<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cA disembodied faith would be a faith that is disconnected. Your body, your lived experience, is disconnected from what you are learning. I grew up in a church like that. I grew up in a church where you had to leave all your stuff at the door before you came in. Because we just didn\u2019t have space or language for some of those things. \u2026&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When I think about an embodied faith, it is that wholeness. Like how does the Gospel and Jesus permeate through every piece of who you are? \u2026 I think an embodied faith is one that is lived out. It\u2019s a lived-out, actionable faith \u2026 What does it look like to bring all of who I am, those pieces \u2014 the good parts and the broken parts in my faith lived out? So I think it is wholeness. Wholeness in living out my faith in an authentic way, one that is rooted and grounded to the realities of our world. \u201d \u2013 Wendy Chen&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A Prayer to Lead You<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>God, we are weary. We are brokenhearted. Tragedy after tragedy and injustice after injustice cause us to lose hope. We feel disoriented and angry. Help us to trust in you. Remind us of your goodness. We bring our full selves to your presence. We know we can cast all our anxiety on you. Renew our hope. We long for the day when you will make all things new. Amen.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A Practice to Begin<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>How do we pay attention to what is happening in us below the surface? Oftentimes we can be tempted to ignore things in our lives that cause us stress or give us anxiety. Wendy talks about the practice of \u201cnaming\u201d her fears and anxieties: \u201cWhen you name it, it takes the shame away. It takes the anxiety away,\u201d she says<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Take some time to name the stressors, anxieties and fears in your life. Consider making a list and inviting God to be with you in these emotions. Consider sharing your list with a close friend or a trusted mentor.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>How does naming your anxieties take the power away? How does it help you integrate your emotions and anxieties into your faith, into God\u2019s presence?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As you go through the rest of your week, whenever you find yourself facing anxiety, fear or stress, call to mind this truth: God welcomes all of it.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Questions to Answer<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>As we seek to end \u201cthe stress-cycle,\u201d as Wendy calls it, one act of resistance we can incorporate into our lives is embracing joy. Ask yourself what brings you joy and delight. What do you love and what makes you laugh? Wendy reminds us that things that give us joy and delight also give us a glimpse into what we were created to do.
