Mission Trip Changes Life Goal for Albanian

  • by Elizabeth Bahe

10 years ago, because of communism, Albania was closed to the world—and the gospel. Now 65 people are staff members with Cru in Albania. Berat Gegaj may be number 66.

A Cru staff member first invited Berat to a weekly meeting, and soon after, he attended a Cru student conference. When he saw people who loved one another and had true joy because of Christ, he realized Jesus could also finally give him rest.

Berat needed rest in his soul after the terror of war in his hometown. Ninety percent of the homes had been burned and many civilians massacred.

A year after the student conference, Berat attended a summer mission project in Fleur, described by some as the Las Vegas of Albania. He and other Albanian students showed the JESUS film at night and received evangelism training by day.

Berat did not see anyone accept Christ during the project, but his passion for telling others about Jesus has not been squelched. "My greatest desire in life is to be a servant of God," he says. "I hope when I finish school that I can be a missionary."
