Tampa Bay Buccaneer Warrick Dunn is an elusive, electrifying running back best known for his exceptional game-breaking speed and quickness. Today, as the winner of the 2009 Bart Starr Award, he was honored not for his incredible athleticism, but for his exemplary character and leadership on the field, in the home and in the community.

Bart Starr presented Dunn with the award during the 22nd annual NFL-sanctioned Super Bowl Breakfast, hosted by Athletes in Action, at the University of South Florida Sun Dome in Tampa this morning.

The Bart Starr Award, bearing the name of NFL Hall of Famer Bart Starr, honors Starr's lifelong commitment to serving as a positive role model to his family, teammates and community. The winner of the Bart Starr Award is determined each year by NFL player balloting at the end of the regular season, making the award 1 of only 2 individual honors selected by the players themselves.

Other 2009 award finalists included Kurt Warner, quarterback for the Arizona Cardinals and Drew Brees, quarterback for the New Orleans Saints.

"Just to be mentioned in the same breath as Bart Starr is an incredible honor,” said Dunn. “I’ve won a lot of awards, but this is one I’ll really cherish because of what it stands for.”

Since 1997, Warrick Dunn has been touching the hearts of single parents -- first in Tampa, then in Baton Rouge and Atlanta and now in Tallahassee. The Warrick Dunn Foundation and his Homes for the Holidays program has maintained the goal of keeping his late mother's dream of home ownership alive by assisting hard-working single parents in owning their first home.

Dunn also donates time and resources to Athletes for Hope, Boy Scouts and Hurricane Katrina Relief.

The Super Bowl Breakfast and award presentation featured NFL athletes and coaches, including recently retired Indianapolis Colts' head coach Tony Dungy, NFL Hall of Famer Bart Starr and former Bart Starr Award recipients Derrick Brooks, Anthony Munoz and Brent Jones. A record-breaking crowd of 7,000 people filled the Sun Dome this morning, making this year’s event the largest in Super Bowl Breakfast history.
