Located in Western Africa, bordering the North Atlantic Ocean, between Guinea and Senegal
Under Portuguese rule, the Catholic Church functioned almost as an arm of the colonial government, and Evangelicals were forbidden or discriminated against. There is currently freedom of religion and significant syncretism between Islam or Catholicism and African traditional beliefs. Christians helped during the civil war of 1998-1999 and are respected by the government.
